This letter to the editor is in response to the article in New Socialist magazine, which interviews the trans scholar and activist Viviane Namaste.
Hi New Socialist magazine,
Thanks for publishing the Viviane Namaste interview in the latest issue of New Socialist magazine, and your commitment to advocate for the rights of trans people.
I do however have concerns over your handling of intersex issues/ movement. Intersex activists do not generally view ourselves as part of the "transgender" umbrella, most profoundly because doing so almost always invisibilize and erase specificities of intersex experiences. Your handling of intersex--which is that you stated that you are committed to advocating for intersex people and included "intersex" in the definition of "transgender," but didn't do anything to help our movement--exemplifies this pattern.
I hope that you would investigate the unique issues faced by intersex people further, and perhaps publish an article/interview on the topic sometime in the future. For more information about intersexuality, please check the following sites:
